HICLIMB HAWAII, well known in the community for hosting events, kept the tradition alive by transforming its state-of-the-art facility from a vibrant training ground blackout affair for their annual "Flashacre" event. This is not your average gym session; it’s an evening where athletic challenge merges with costumes and competitive spectacle, drawing Honolulu’s climbing community out for a thrilling, black light adventure. The Flashacre promises a totally new way to experience the walls, pushing both technical skill and spatial awareness in the dark.

Before the event, several neon, fluorescent, and glow-in-the-dark holds are strategically set across the bouldering walls, illuminated by powerful black-lights. The entire rock climbing gym, from the massive overhangs to the dedicated training zones, becomes a canvas of glowing streaks and geometric shapes. Climbers are encouraged to wear their own costumes and neon or white gear, turning the participants themselves into moving constellations against the pitch-black backdrop.

The atmosphere is electric, fueled by a live DJ set by Brandon and Kinnil of Island Surge, and climbers decked out in costumes ranging from simple skeletons to elaborate monsters and dancing dinosaurs. The excitement was amplified by a competitive spirit, as participants competed for the top prize in the bouldering competition with a $250 grand prize, alongside the fun of the costume contest. But beneath the party vibe lies a genuine climbing challenge. The limited, triadic vision forces climbers to rely less on color-coded routes and more on feel, texture, and pure intuition to find their next grip. It’s a sensory overload that requires intense focus, making even familiar routes feel brand new and unnerving, perfect for a Halloween thrill.

The community aspect is strong, with climbers cheering each other on as they attempt illuminated routes they can barely see. “The community here is incredibly welcoming and supportive. Whether you’re a beginner learning the ropes or a seasoned climber chasing your next project, there’s something here for you. My son and I had a great time climbing here.” As stated by local guide Dave Martin. For those fueling up or winding down, the presence of the popular Provecho chilaquiles food vendor ensured the energy stayed high throughout the night. The Flashacre has quickly become a beloved favorite at HIClimb, marking a unique moment where the spirit of the holiday elevates the sport. It serves as a testament to the Hawaiian climbing scene's commitment to both athletic excellence and fun. If you want a genuinely unforgettable, high-energy, and spooky way to test your limits, look no further than this cosmic climbing experience at HiClimb Hawaii, located at 825 Ilaniwai St, Honolulu, HI 96813.
